Those are nice thighs!

Every time I go to the grocery store, I hunt for sales on the meat products. Did you ever take notice that boneless, skinless chicken breasts rarely go on sale? This is by no accident my friends! I also find it ironic that women usually pick chicken breast when out at a restaurant if they are “watching their figure.” Those people are most likely the same ones throwing “smart ones” desserts into their carts. Will they ever learn? I digress.

What I find most interesting is the discrimination women have over chicken breasts versus other parts of the chicken. Is it not more important how you prepare the meat rather than the meat itself? For example: deep fried, breaded chicken breast with a cream sauce OR roasted, herbed chicken thigh. You pick the better option! This is turning into an epic rant faster than Tiger Woods backpedaling his actions. I’m getting a little tired of people criticizing me eating a chicken thigh instead of the breast or having 2 strips of bacon with eggs. Don’t I know it’s bad for me? I eat bacon maybe once a week?! This is usually coming out of the mouth of someone having bagels or sugary cereal. I can sense readers of Hungry Girl on the attack as I shun their 200 calorie faux food meal ideas. I eat real food people. I cannot and will not stand for chemically laden substitutes.

I want people to nourish themselves and be able to save money in the process. I feel like this is a secret of common sense? I’m not attacking any individuals here, but I just think it’s about time something should be said about the quality of food we take into our bodies. Respect yourself! PRO TIP: I just bought nearly 6lbs of chicken thighs (skin on) for $2.50. Total. NOT $2.50 a pound, the entire package cost me that much. If I were to buy the EXACT same amount in boneless, skinless chicken breast it would have  cost me $17.94! I’m not even kidding. I wish I was but it’s such a travesty to see how many people are being ripped off in the market. Be a smart consumer! Rotate your meat, buy what is on sale & store it in the freezer if you can’t use it all right away.  I totally will be that awkward girl in the store gawking at chicken parts saying “HEY! Those are nice thighs!” I hope you’ll learn to love them as well!

Easy Chicken Thighs Marengo recipe (I use EVOO instead of the nonstick cooking spray they recommend).

I’ve been vegetarian for two years now. A lot of people are immediately turned off to the idea, citing that there’s no way to get enough protein or that it’s just too hard. I’ve found that kindly stating facts and giving personal insight often helps people be more open-minded to my food decisions. People who are attempting to go about a healthy lifestyle in what you consider the “wrong” way (“smart ones”, bagels, etc) might be more apt to listen to your point of view if you don’t put them into a box. Just a thought!

This wasn’t a post about vegetarianism or why I believe in primal eating. Rather, I want consumers to stop buying “diet foods” and truly nourish themselves in a variety of ways. A little outside of the box thinking can save you money, give you a wider array of vitamins & minerals & may help you lose a few pounds in the process! Humans didn’t consume grains, dairy (or artificially laden diet foods) & were taller, stronger than we are today. Check the Smithsonian museum fossil records! The proof is in the meat, fat, vegetables, nuts/seeds & berries :)

such a thought, I’ve never analyzed the situation that way. very open mind! I think I’ll do the same from now on….. there’s nothing wrong with the other parts of the chicken! :D
