Some serious text ahead…Even though that churning, dull ache in my stomach has waxed and waned I ended up at the doctor yesterday. My torso was covered in hives!!! WTF mates? I saw a different doctor who immediately put in a request for tests to be done on my bloodwork and stool samples. I got my blood drawn right then and there and was sent home with a bag full of goodies to do a home “collection” of sorts. His initial suspicions are something inflammatory and he mentioned Celiac and Crohn’s disease. However, it is possible that I could have a parasite so he’s checking for that as well. In the meantime, I am ordered to avoid any wheat and dairy products and keep a food journal for the next 7 days. He will call me if my bloodwork is very abnormal earlier than my appointment but I am scheduled for a follow up next Monday. I’ll confess that now I am a little bit nervous. *Cross your fingers*
1. Any suggestions for good food that is easily digestable?
2. Do you have an allergy to wheat or Crohn’s? How do you manage it?

Hi there, I’ve been a follower for months but never post. I’m one of “those” blog lurkers but felt it time to delurk.
This sounds pretty scary and I’m so sorry you’re going through it. Some suggestions for easily digestable food – brown rice, miso soup w/seaweed. Broths with vegetables such as zucchini and other sqashes, root vegetables(sweet potatoes, turnips, rutabagas). Protein can be tough when you have stomach issues but liquid proteins such as rice and pea protein powders are easy to digest and can help with meeting your daily protein requirments.
I hope this helps some and please keep us posted on your progress.
Warm Regards,
Alexandra

I had a similar situation about 6bmonths ago – not the hives, but GI problems, and all the same tests and whatnot for the same things. I am still trying to figure everything out. I don’t have Crohn’s, but am gluten intolerant (only found that out for sure affter months of tests).
It’s really not that bad. I highly recommend getting a good blender if you don’t have one already, because anything blended is WAY easier to digest. I make a lot of soup and smoothies.

alexandra: i currently use hemp protein powder, do you see an advantage with the pea? not so keen on the taste of rice protein. thanks for reading!
katie: have you had any GI issues since sorting out the gluten issue?

I use hemp protein powder on ocassion as well but I typically mix it with rice and/or pea. In terms of hemp advantage over the pea, for me the pea is easier to digest. Also, smoothies made with pea have a better texture (less gritty) than when I make with hemp and/or a combo of hemp and pea. Nutrtionally, their both great sources of plant based protein.
Like you, I wasn’t too keen on rice protein powder until I found Sun Warrior. It’s made from sprouted brown rice and it is the best I’ve ever tasted. I’m hooked now. It’s more expensive that some of the other brands out there but it’s worth it.
