once upon a time, my work decided to give us off on friday and let us bring our families to kennywood. and then they called it good…which it most obviously was! truth be told, i haven’t been to kennywood since high school and was eager to return to the dumpy charming little park.
if you’ve seen the movie ‘adventureland,’ you will see glimpses of the park. it’s a pretty accurate representation of summer work and it highlights the parties that happen after hours which…considering my ‘sources’ turned out to be pretty true after all!
kennywood was the place where all the schools surrounding pittsburgh had their summer picnics…where relationships were made or broken! above all the hype was the lure of the elusive kennywood ‘outfit.’ i mean girls spent the whole month planning what they would wear on picnic day! serious business! also, it’s well known in this town that if your zipper on your jeans is undone, it’s courteous to say ‘HEY! kennywood’s open!‘ the offender aka victim sheepishly retreats to correct their wardrobe malfunction.
to be honest, not much has changed! however, the park seemed much smaller to me now than it did back then. there are a few more thrill rides and a new coaster called ‘sky rocket’ which was pretty fun! what i love most about the park is the retro americana vibe that filters through the funscape. i’ve never seen another park in the states quiet like it! the park has rides that date back to the early 1900s!

did you have a school picnic day at an amusement park? what is something that makes you nostalgic?

Oh man I remember any kind of school field trips made things more dramatic. Like if you had a crush you’d hope that you would sit by them or something lol. I think water parks can be nostalgic for me. Ohh and Bob Dylan, the beginning of Spring, and certain people I come across.. like people you feel you’ve known for forever. It was always exciting the night before a field trip too
I love this post, and your questions at the end.
p.s. check out my last post
I passed an award on to you!

I just recently watched Adventureland and thought of you (because that’s your summer movie!). I love Kennywood’s old-fashioned charm. I’m not a huge roller coaster person, so I go for the atmosphere (and food).
