calling my fellow sushi lovers

i’m not under the impression that i am the first person to watch this documentary that came out in 2011. however, i am urging you to watch jiro dreams of sushi in case you haven’t seen/heard of it yet. you can stream it on netflix and somehow in 80mins you manage to not only crave sushi, but a trip to japan.

i found it to be a thoughtful reflection of what vocation means in its truest form. it’s a beautiful portrayal of an artisan at work. jiro ono at age 85, is a grand composer of a sushi symphony. let me know if you check it out!

It must have been a sushi kind of weekend. Zach at work made sushi and brought it in to show me. He also loves documentaries—so I’m passing your blog post along. Talk about Serendipity.

I don’t mean to discount your post (I love Sushi!!) but I was hoping you could do an update sometime soon about your thoughts on maca, if you’re still taking it, and if your body has found equilibrium yet. I am in a similar position to the one you were in and I don’t know how to proceed! Thank you so much :)

hey kristin-oh maca. well, as far as all the claims, i have my reservations. i do notice small energy effects akin to that of drinking a small cup of coffee but as for libido or hormone regulation i think the jury is still out on that! i haven’t seen enough credible research proving or disproving the effects of this root.

i had serum blood tests done in july and my hormones are in normal ranges but i have yet to have a natural cycle since dec 2011. i did take a 10 day course of progesterone last month and experienced a withdraw bleed a couple days after i stopped that pill. i did so to ensure that i was not putting unnecessary strain on my body by not shedding the lining.

i am hoping that my body will eventually cycle on its own but i do plan to take progesterone again if i do not have a cycle in another 3-4 months. i will not resume birth control and am hopeful that i will once again regain my cycle.

just be patient and try not to stress! i do advise you get a blood workup done to test where your tsh, fsh, testosterone, estrogen etc levels are at to get an idea of other potential factors affecting your amenorrhea. hope that helps! -best :)

it’s a def must watch esp since you are so knowledgeable about eastern ways of thinking. his thought process is so anti-western and interesting!

I’ve been meaning to watch this! I’ve heard it’s one of the best documentaries of the year so far. I’ve been wanting to go to Japan forEVER (ever since I read Memoirs of A Geisha in 7th grade… ha), and I’m always down for some sush!

i’d agree…it’s really well made and very engaging for such a simple but refined art. i mean, sushi in japan is like quick grab and go and here it’s more of an upscale type experience. i loved it!

I LOVE this movie! Glad to know I can stream it on Netflix now :) I was actually inspired by this movie to write an article for JNSQ on the art of sushi. There were so many noteworthy things about that movie. It enlightened how I view sushi, and I respect his ethic… from how he prepares this cuisine to realizing what kinds of things need to change in the fishing industry. A beautifully shot film, and very informative as well :)

oh i know what you mean, i was TOTALLY inspired just from his perspective about a job being a vocation and not just something you do for money. it made me want to become an artisan straight up!
